While the other kids at Salem High were freaking about the prom, Philip was serving his country as an undercover ISA agent. He and John Black tracked Tony DiMera by day, while Philip courted John's daughter Belle by night.

Belle and Philip are barely engaged when he's called up to serve in Iraq. The two marry, even though Belle still loves Shawn D. Brady. But after Philip loses a leg in battle, Belle stays with him. The relationship starts to blossom when they welcome their first child, Claire, into the world. Until they find out the fertility lab had made a mistake and that Claire is actually Shawn's daughter.

Reeling, Philip flees with the child. He eventually brings Claire home, but his marriage to Belle is over. The last bits of goodness left in Philip were burned away by an attack during a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Bitter and enraged, he works with his father to take custody of Claire. When Shawn and Belle run away with Claire, Philip stalks them to the ends of the earth, and almost kills the one he loves most: Claire.
