Paul -- the son of James Steinbeck -- changed his name to distance himself from his dad's dirty deeds: cheating on and trying to drive Paul's mom insane, kidnapping Paul (several times), and trying to kill Paul's galpal Emily, for starters -- all while telling Paul that they're really two of a kind. Paul hates that.

Paul wants to purge his own darkness. He's not comfortable with everything he's done. Like letting his sister think her baby was dead, just to try to get Craig out of her life. Or tricking the unstable Lily into marriage, just so he could pump her for information, which led to her attempted suicide. (Ironic, much?) But he loves his brother Will, his dead sister Jennifer, and sometimes his mom -- except when she sticks her nose into his life.
