In honor of ABC's upcoming drama Eastwick -- based on the 1984 John Updike novel The Witches of Eastwick, as well as the 1987 film of the same name -- we here at SOAPnet.com wanted to look back at daytime's own rich, mysterious history of the paranormal. Naturally, the entire series run of Passions comes to mind, replete with witches, demons, living dolls, random musical numbers during painful births, and portals to Hell in someone's bedroom closet. But more recent examples include Ghost Alan (Stuart Damon) on General Hospital, Marlena getting possessed by Salem's version of the Devil on Days of our Lives ... even Viki's trips to Heaven and/or the Old West on One Life to Live.
And speaking of Eastwick, for those not in the Jack Nicholson know ... the series follows three women living in the small New England town of Eastwick -- Joanna (Lindsay Price), the introverted local reporter; Kat (Jaime Ray Newman), the harried mother and wife; and Roxie (Rebecca Romijn), the quirky artist. These three women, because of preconceived notions, initially don't get along ... but a mysterious encounter in the local park not only draws them together as friends, but also uncovers some magical talents they never knew they had. Things really get interesting when wealthy, eccentric Darryl Van Horne (Paul Gross) moves to town ...
By the by -- in case Jaime Ray's name looks familiar, it's because she costarred on General Hospital from 2001 until '03 as Kristina Cassadine. And Lindsay Price is not only a veteran of Beverly Hills, 90210, but of All My Children as well (remember her as An Li? The one that married Brian Bodine for a green card?).
So take a trip down a ghostly Memory Lane by checking out our Supernatural Soaps gallery. We promise you'll have a fiendishly good time ... mwahahaha!
Tune into Eastwick on Wednesday, September 23rd, at 10PM!
What's your favorite supernatural soap storyline?
Comments
The supernatural in soaps began with Dark Shadows. The first vampire on a soap was the one and only Barnabas Collins. The first time traveler in soapland was Victoria Winters, when she traveled to 1795. Viki went to Heaven ? Well, years before that Angelique and Nicholas Blair went to the other place.
It began with Dark Shadows.
i agree, the best supernatural soap was Port Charles, remember john(one life to live) and sam(general hospital) as vampires and lovers. I still dont understand why they took Port Charles away from us
Forget all those others... the ultimate first and best scary soap was Dark Shadows.
I cannot believe that that Soapnet.com would have a gallery featuring supernatural soaps and their storylines and not include the BEST supernatural soap of all, my beloved PORT CHARLES. Way to go Soapnet. It really pisses me off that you guys would go on about every other soap that featured supernatural storylines and even one that wasn't even supernatural at all, aka, Josh's true origin and parentage on AMC, and exclude PC. It's times like these I'm glad I visit this site less and less..
