Scott Evans Dishes "Kish," Kiss

Scott Evans answered our questions.Scott Evans joined the cast of "One Life to Live" in late 2007 in the recurring role of sweet and sorta geeky police officer Oliver Fish, but over the last few months has seen himself placed on the front burner in a much-anticipated -- and buzzed about -- upcoming romance with the character of Kyle (Brett Claywell). Currently, Fish is totally in denial that he's gay, and to prove it is dating his roommate Layla Williamson. On Thursday, August 6th's "OLTL," Kyle and Fish (dubbed "Kish" by many) shared a long-awaited kiss. We talked with Scott Evans to get his thoughts on the kiss, Fish, and all things "OLTL."

How does it feel to be part of a story that's gotten so much attention from a lot of different outlets?

It feels incredible! It's something I certainly didn't see coming at all. I joined the cast in a smaller role and it's just been getting more airtime. I had no idea where my character was going -- and then when it happened, it was awesome. To be part of a story like this [Fish and Kyle's romance; Fish's coming out] is incredible.

So what's up with Fish? What's going through his head? He seems to be very blatantly denying that he's gay.

Right now, [he's in] an insane internal struggle -- which a lot of people go through, depending on where they come from and their backgrounds. He was raised in a really conservative background. So there's this huge struggle trying to figure out what to do -- if anything.

I love Fish regardless. His struggle helped me think what people must go through coming out and it must be extremely difficult. As a parent myself it also has to be difficult to have your dreams for your kids not be those dreams.

Gay, straight, bi what is the difference...they are all people. You know, the human being kind with feelings etc. Respect people for the kind of person they are. Good, bad etc.

Thank you agboinv, I was just curious as to whether he was or not. Unless I missed it, he didn't really touch on it in his interview. He's a great actor and i'm glad they kept him on the show. I really appreciate you answering my question. "Thank You Again, Bye Bye"

AWESOME response! Well stated and to the point - thank you!

I'm loving this storyline, and it's refreshing to see my experience portrayed in a meaningful way in soaps. OLTL is handling this story great so far, making all of the characters real and likable in some way. It's nice to see soaps realizing that there is a huge viewership (straight, gay, bi, trans, whatever) that wants to see good stories about relationships and is figuring out ways to keep the viewers coming back for more.

Love is love, and no one gets to define that for someone else.

You know, Mydragon58, I feel similarly when I have to watch a heterosexual couple do the same. But I do not demean or degrade them simply because I do not understand their attraction. I accept and affirm the love, desire or passion they are expressing is doing so, understanding that while it is not the way my sexual and romantic orientation was biologically hardwired they are equally deserving of respect. I am certain that if you and your partner were having a moment exactly like, or similar to, that depicted between Kyle and Fish and someone pointed and screamed "Eeewww! That's gross! I'm going to throw up!" SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU WERE [straight/interracial/interfaith/mixed age/hefty-skinny/or in any other way] DIFFERENT than the opposing majority group around you, both of you would feel belittled and second-class.

We (GLBTQ persons) have the same attractions and feelings as straight people, and express that in the same exact ways. In the larger context, that is what the OLTL production team is aiming at: showing Americans like yourself that gay, lesbian and bisexual people are no different than heterosexuals and that we also face unique challenges as many others do in their own ways (as per explicit statement by the executive producer). Bravo to the OLTL ensemble for being inclusive and portraying a compassionate and real story with Kyle and Fish! They are working their craft perfectly and as it was intended.

Also, if you have such discomfort with gay men, or simply with physical affection between men (be it romantic or otherwise), you may want to consider ending your viewership of OLTL as it is; Scott Evans (playing Oliver Fish), Ron Carlivati (Head Writer) and Nicholas Rodriguez (who will be playing Nick starting Aug 17) are all out [and proud] gay men in real life. Also, the character of Nick will also be a gay male character who presents a temporary romantic relationship for Kyle.

Good luck finding a replacement as As the World Turns, the Young and the Restless, All My Children, General Hospital and countless other daytime programs have chosen to be inclusive of GLBTQ storylines and even major characters.

This response also applies to you, Avitone

Then don't watch it drgert. I've been watching ONTL for 20 some years and it's great they finally have another gay storyline.

Based on your comments you live in the old world but the fact is, this is part of life and a part of who people are.

I am glad you can condone the adultery and sleeping around that is portrayed but have such low tolerance for how people are born.

Best of luck to you.

I think the storyline is well written (to date) and shows the turmoil that alot of gay men go through. I have many gay friends, male and female alike, and it's not easy "coming out". My own daughter didin't tell me; I approached her myself. It was something I had known for a long time but she had tried to hide from me and the rest of the family. Once she talked about it with me, telling the rest of the fam was easier. I told alot of them; I love my child no matter who or what she is. I'm extremely proud of my daughter and the way that she handles herself. Shows like OLTL help pave the way for people in all walks of life. OLTL is doing this with good writing and actors. Kudos to the writers!
