"Roseanne" is one of the truly great sitcoms, up there in the pantheon with "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "I Love Lucy," and "Absolutely Fabulous" as essential feminist texts. Running for nine seasons from 1988 to 1997, "Roseanne" focused on "domestic diva" Roseanne Conner and her family in the working class town of Llanford, Illinois. (Fun fact: Llanford was named in honor of Llanview, the central town in one of Roseanne's favorite soaps, "One Life to Live." Clint Richie, John Loprieno, and Robert S. Woods even guest-starred on an episode. See our slideshow for pictures.) Roseanne was a take-charge mother who struggled to maintain the balance of work and family in economic lean times. Through the course of the series, the show dealt with pregnancy, obesity, homosexuality, social class, race, and much, much more. If it was controversial, "Roseanne" confronted it head on.
Also in the Conner brood were Roseanne's put-upon husband Dan, eager student Becky, morose middle daughter Darlene, and chipper young son DJ. Also passing through the living room and kitchen were Roseanne's flighty sister Jackie, her meddling mother Beverly, and the girls' boyfriends Mark and David. It was a full house (no pun intended) to be sure, but the tight quarters led to lots of laughs and one of the '90s most enduring pop culture creations.
