Did you two have a character or couple where an idea came to you right away?
Donna: "Yes. One thing that came to us right away [surrounded] James Mitchell [Palmer Cortlandt]'s passing. We love Palmer and his whole legacy. So, to be able to get in there, we decided to design a lot of our stories around him. It will be a Pandora's Box opening when his will is read. We wanted to use that and a lot of characters coming off of that. That was special to us."
David: "And to write for Erica Kane is a big thrill."
Donna: "Of course. What's unique about this show is that they have really strong women. Angie, Erica, Greenlee, Kendall -- strong women are really fascinating, and I think we can help strengthen some of the men on the show and bring in some strong men."
David: "Angie and Jesse is another couple that we were really looking forward to giving a story. They've been under-utilized for a while, and we think they are great."
Donna: "We love Tad too."
David: "And the chance to invigorate the younger generation as well."
Donna: "That's a real special thing for us because we love writing the kids. I remember when I started on AMC was the Jenny, Greg, Jesse, and Angie days. So, I want to get back to that powerful group of kids again. It's really a goal of ours within the next year."
Just throwing out some character names, can you tell us a little bit about what we can expect to see -- or what you hope to accomplish or move toward? Let's start with Erica.
Donna: "Erica is someone who definitely needs to go back to her feisty self. I think she will find a new man coming in. She's had a lot of bad marriages, but has she ever had the right man? A lot of men have left her and she's left a lot of men, so I think she's ripe to be in a good triangle between Jack and another guy."
David: "And [getting involved] with a guy who seems to be worst possible person in the world for her."
The wrong one would also be great for comedy.
Donna: "That's something we would like to put back in for Susan [Lucci]. She is hugely funny, and we love seeing her in those situations."
David: "We can play great romantic comedy with Erica."
Donna: "Yes, she can do classic romantic comedy, and that is one thing that we love about her."
What about Greenlee?
Donna: "We were lucky enough to come in when she was coming back. Look for a lot more of Greenlee going head-to-head with Erica. I think what's really going to be interesting is that we know that Ryan and Greenlee are hugely popular, but I think the journey for them to get back together is going to be really fun to watch because David is now in the mix."
David: "And Greenlee has connection with David because he saved her life, so she'll always feel something for this guy. She understands him and he really understands her. But of course, any relationship with David is really double-edged. On one hand, he can love like no one else and will do anything for the person he cares about, but he will also do anything to hold on to that person. For Greenlee that will be a challenge to make it work with this guy and still be as strong as she's always been."
Donna: "It's really a Beauty and the Beast kind of storyline. He is that man who has gone through town like a raging fire, and is this the one woman who can stop him in his tracks? Or will she be overcome? It's a real interesting dynamic."
David: "And what will it do to Greenlee to be married to this guy who everyone in town hates? What kind of life can you have?"
