He's the son of the man who Jason killed in Bensonhurst on Sonny's orders- the one that Domini/Dante thought of as a father figure. Apparently, the man's death caused Dante to come to Port Charles to finally bust Sonny. And it's also caused the man's real son, played by James Franco, to avenge the hit man who did the deed.

I think it is AJ also noone really ever actually dies in Port Charles.
