David Canary to Retire

David Canary has decided to retireFive-time Daytime Emmy winner David Canary -- who has played manipulative and controlling (but lovable) millionaire Adam Chandler on All My Children since 1983 -- has announced his retirement.

"My career on All My Children has given me more than words could ever convey, both professionally and personally. I have cherished each and every moment. I would like to thank all the fans who have tuned in throughout the years. Their love and support has meant the world to me. I truly feel that I will leave the show in great hands. The viewers will be happy with how Adam departs the canvas and I know that leaving JR (Jacob Young) as head of the Chandler household will continue to provide the show with many great stories to come. This is not the last you've seen of Adam Chandler. I will be back to check up on the Chandler Clan," David said.

David, who also played Adam's gentle twin Stuart, will air through April 2010. Expect to see a scandalous end to his marriage with Annie (Melissa Claire Egan) and a reunion with an ex-wife. Which one? Take a guess -- he's got six of them (that are alive, at least). Look for the aftermath of his departure to leave a fight for power within the Chandler household.

We wish David all the best!

How would YOU like to see Adam bid adieu to Pine Valley?

I will definitely miss you, David. It is time for your to live a little, right? Enjoy your time and keep busy volunteering or participating in your favorite sport, or spoil your grandchildren. I pray for your continued good health. There is no replacing your character. God bless you and your family.

David/Adam, having been an All my Children fan from its beginnings, I'm going to miss you. You're a great actor and made it look so easy. All my Children will be poorer without you. The second part of feeling sorry to see you go: some characters from the past are coming back on the show and I've been so looking forward to that. BUT if Adam pairs up with that lady, it means her return to the show will be short lived as she rides off into the sunset with you. Great move that Adam's getting rid of Annie though. Considering her state of mind and the age difference, Annie & Adam's relationship seemed more like child abuse so--that's another reason why Adam's shaking her will be a good move.
Every good wish for future endeavours. I'm sure you won't be sitting on your duff somewhere.

To David Canary: As a child, I saw you on Gunsmoke as the man who was working with nitro distilled from TNT. To this day, I am moved by your performance as the man tried to syphon off the oily glycerin in a barrel and the anxiety, sweat and fear you showed before the cabin blew up. That was when I knew what acting really meant. You are right to retire at this time, but please- dearest man - know how much true talent like yours will be missed in an industry where wiping one's hand over one's hair is considered acting. Saying Thank You is not enough to express what your work has meant in all the years since that Gunsmoke episode cemented you in our memories. In Peace, CyndyM (and I never sign my name on these sites, brother!)

Well, this is the nail in the coffin....I don't understand why ABC chose to back All My Children over One Life To Live (moving it to LA and investing in HD, new sets) when the heart and soul of AMC is all but dead. All My Children used to be compelling and addictive back in the 80s..but now there is only a shell left of that...One Life To Live at least has honored its past and kept its core (legacy) characters intact. The writing is sharp and funny, as well as poignant and moving when called for. The characters are honored....anyway AMC does not have much hope at all now that Canary is leaving...

David you will be greatly missed. I can't even imagine All My Children without Adam Chandler. The show is losing too many core characters. I am glad though that Adam's departure will be with someone from his colorful past and his horrendous marriage to Annie will be brought to an end. Please visit us on AMC frequently and my best wishes go with you always.

It sadden me to hear you are leaving AMC, it will not be the same but I wish you the best in your future endeavors. I watched you for the one year on Bonanza, then you were on Another World playing Steve Frame. You are a talented actor and whatever you do you always give it 100% and I love you for that. I will miss you so come back soon.

Wow, AMC without Adam Chandler? There will definitely be a void there. Good luck Mr. Canary. Enjoy retirement.
