Five-time Daytime Emmy winner David Canary -- who has played manipulative and controlling (but lovable) millionaire Adam Chandler on All My Children since 1983 -- has announced his retirement.
"My career on All My Children has given me more than words could ever convey, both professionally and personally. I have cherished each and every moment. I would like to thank all the fans who have tuned in throughout the years. Their love and support has meant the world to me. I truly feel that I will leave the show in great hands. The viewers will be happy with how Adam departs the canvas and I know that leaving JR (Jacob Young) as head of the Chandler household will continue to provide the show with many great stories to come. This is not the last you've seen of Adam Chandler. I will be back to check up on the Chandler Clan," David said.
David, who also played Adam's gentle twin Stuart, will air through April 2010. Expect to see a scandalous end to his marriage with Annie (Melissa Claire Egan) and a reunion with an ex-wife. Which one? Take a guess -- he's got six of them (that are alive, at least). Look for the aftermath of his departure to leave a fight for power within the Chandler household.
We wish David all the best!
How would YOU like to see Adam bid adieu to Pine Valley?

Oh, I was pretty sure I could see the handwriting on the wall when Stuart died. So glad to hear Adam will be making occasional check-ups on his Chandler clan in the future. And I SO hope the ex he will be getting back with is Brooke. I always thought they were great together! And, I just have to say, I also remember David Canary on Bonanza - not the re-runs either! We will all miss you, David! Love to you and yours.
I had read that there was a chance that David Canary was leaving AMC after reading about it in ABC Soaps in Depth. Now that I see it posted here that he is retiring, I just wished I was dreaming this, and when I wake up, it just wasn't true.
AMC will now be left with a terrible void. Adam made the show. I have been watching AMC for a long time now and when they brought on the character of Adam and then eventually Stuart, I truly thought for awhile it was 2 different people playing both parts. That is how a great an actor he is. I also enjoyed watching him play the part of Candy on Bonanza. I also enjoyed seeing him play the part of Sweeney Todd at the North Shore Music Theater in Beverly, MA. He was absolutely great. I had to see it twice. I will truly miss him and wish him and his family a wonderful happy healthy life. It won't be the same again not seeing him on the show. He was my favorite. I wanted to add that my entire family got hooked on All My Children due to David Canary's role as Adam/Stuart. Like me, they were amazed at his performance. He surely deserved those five emmy awards he received.
I think it is going to be a sad day for AMC and all the fans when David does leave. I am so happy for him he deserves this after all he's been doing this for a long time, and this will give Jacob Young some good stories. I hope the writers or tptb will write him out in a wonderful way. Don't do like Greenlee's storyline, one minute she's dead the next she's not etc..... I don't think the fans could stand that, but knowing that he will make an appearance from time to time is wonderful as well. Now I think I understand why Haley came back for the 40th!!
Good Luck David and Happy Retirement!!
This just can not be true, on the heels of losing Palmer now Adam. What will AMC do? I can't imagine them going on much longer.
David, I have watched you in Western shows and loved you then. You will definitely be missed and remembered. Thank you for all your "love/hate" character(s) and the roles you have played over the years. If you come back to AMC periodically, it will be wonderful. God bless you and enjoy your well-deserved retirement. Thank you again for your many years of entertainment.
I miss him already:(
Good bye David, I will miss you so much. I have watched AMC for years, I know all of the co stars will miss you also. I just watched the show tonight on SoapNet, and you were so good with JR> Gosh I miss you already! The show is getting good again, I have been enjoying it, and you have been smiling a lot lately and looking well. I hope you enjoy your retirement and please come back from time to time to wreak havoc, and keep Hayward in line. My sister and I kid each other when we go to the hospital around here, we act like “Palmer and Adam” PS I am Adam..HA HA We try to take over the hospital and boss them around..Just kidding though, but some of these hospitals need to be told! Well, good bye again and I will miss you terribly. I saw you on the retro station in an episode of Bonanza a few weeks ago. Gosh those were the good ole days.
You are a wonderful actor and person!

David,
I am certainly going to miss you and the character we all love to hate, which tells us that you are one of the best. I still watch you on the western channel and I can imagine that you sail off on a trip to see the world in a bigger and better Yacht than you sold Erica taking the real love of your life with you. We all wish you a lovely retirement and stop by and remind us you're still the Man of All My Children.
Sad news that he’s leaving, but hope he gets many, many years to enjoy his retirement in good health. David Canary is a great actor. We (my Mom, Dad and I) have enjoyed seeing him on “All My Children” since he joined the show and had the pleasure of seeing him off-Broadway here in NY (he was in a play with Mark Consuleos years ago). As another poster said, you forget you are watching the same actor play two roles (when he played Stuart) and he was just so believable as Adam. The show won’t be same without him because he is definitely one of the best parts of it. And yes…hope he goes off with Brooke in the end!! Big mistake to let Julia Barr leave the show and was really looking forward to having her back…. but it does seem as if she might have been brought back to tie up Adam’s story line. In any case, best of luck to Mr. Canary. He’s a pro and it has been a joy to watch the ’silver fox’ all these years! He’ll be missed.
I would love to see him end up with Brook.
