Five-time Daytime Emmy winner David Canary -- who has played manipulative and controlling (but lovable) millionaire Adam Chandler on All My Children since 1983 -- has announced his retirement.
"My career on All My Children has given me more than words could ever convey, both professionally and personally. I have cherished each and every moment. I would like to thank all the fans who have tuned in throughout the years. Their love and support has meant the world to me. I truly feel that I will leave the show in great hands. The viewers will be happy with how Adam departs the canvas and I know that leaving JR (Jacob Young) as head of the Chandler household will continue to provide the show with many great stories to come. This is not the last you've seen of Adam Chandler. I will be back to check up on the Chandler Clan," David said.
David, who also played Adam's gentle twin Stuart, will air through April 2010. Expect to see a scandalous end to his marriage with Annie (Melissa Claire Egan) and a reunion with an ex-wife. Which one? Take a guess -- he's got six of them (that are alive, at least). Look for the aftermath of his departure to leave a fight for power within the Chandler household.
We wish David all the best!
How would YOU like to see Adam bid adieu to Pine Valley?

Happy Retirement. You will definitely be missed. No one can take your place.
Happy Retirement David.
Happily ever after with Brooke would be the best ending. Lets hope Adam comes back time to time.
Happy Retirement David (Adam). Best of luck on your venture in what ever you do. How would I like to end your storyline? By moving away to some tropical island sipping maitais on the beach. Joe Martin has moved away, why can't you. It is better than killing you off, how cruel is that.
I wish you the best and you will be greatly missed. Have a happy retirement. = }
I have always liked Adam. He will be greatly missed. It was amazing how he played Adam/Stuart. I also watched him on bonanza years ago. Hope he really enjoys his retirement. He and Palmer were great together. AMC will never be the same without Adam. It seems that Erica is one of the only "old" ones still there! I remember when Adam came on the show, then there was Stuart who was hiding in his attic. Those were the good ole days! Would like to see Adam leave on a happy note and come back sometimes to keep his family straight. Fairwell David Canary! Who will deal with David Hayward now? Only Adam could. Thank you for the good shows!
i will miss adam/stuart. in the one episode when stuart was missing and then weeks later the AMC storyline showed that stuart had joined a motorcycle gang (i think this was in the 80s) it was hilarious.
About 15 yrs ago, my friend and i were in NYC at lunchtime and many of the AMC castmembers were on lunchbreak. We were so surpirsed to Mr Canary come out of the ABC bldg, in his jogginggear, head down, and jogged around the block. He did not sign autographs like the other actors. He was very very shy, head bent down, and went jogging on his lunchbreak. He was not rude. He was just himself - a man, jogging on his lunchbreak. Even though my friend and I did not get his autograph, we were so happy to see him. He seemed shy and not at all like the character he plays on AMC.
I remenber back in the 60 s when he played with Michael Landon on Bonanza. I liked him then, I like him now.
Although I will miss seeing Mr Canary on AMC, I wish him well. EVERYBODY DESERVES TO RETIRE!

Well, this breaks my heart and I hope David you are well in real life. I do hope you have enjoyed AMC as much as we have enjoyed you over the years. Thanks for some great laughs and some tears! We do hope to see you once in awhile. I was hoping when Stuart died that Adam wasn't too far behind but it's selfish of me because as we all know all good things come to an end. Good Luck best wishes and may life hand you all that you have ever wanted and then some! you deserve it! Happy Retirement!!!
