Bill Horton Recast on Days

John Martin
JPI
John Martin will bring Bill Horton back to Salem for Alice's memorial.

More news out of Salem regarding the upcoming tribute to Alice Horton (and her portrayer, Frances Reid): Just when you thought all the Days of our Lives returnees had been announced comes word from Soap Opera Digest that John Martin -- best known as Frederick on The Young and the Restless (from 2002 until '05) and Hank on Sunset Beach (1997 through '99) -- has been cast as Bill Horton. Bill, one of Alice's sons, is a former Chief of Surgery at Salem University Hospital ... and is presumed to be currently living in Africa.

There's a sad reason for the recast; the previous actors who played Bill -- Ed Mallory and Christopher Stone -- have both passed away. Thankfully, John is no stranger to Salem, having appeared briefly on the show in 1985.

Alice's memorial will air sometime in June -- and will feature not only John as Bill, but also a bevy of former Days stars.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing back in Salem?

I loved Ed Mallory as well & he will always be Bill H for me, but how classy of DOOL to recast the role for this tribute- kudos to them- they got it right! I haven't actually watched DOOL in recent yrs, but am very much anticipating Alice's tribute/memorial episode & who knows- since my Zen left AMC, I've been w/o a soap, so maybe I'll get hooked on DOOL again. I watched the famous Bill, Mickey & Laura tringle back in the day when I was in HS & I can honestly say, to this day, that is my all-time fav soap triangle!

I didn't know Ed Mallory died. When I was a young housewife back in the day, the love triangle of Mickey and Laura Horton and Mickey's brother Bill was a weekly cliff hanger over who Michael's father was, Mickey or Bill's. Seems like yesterday!!
