All My Children Week in Review: Week of 1/17/11

Funniest Moment: When Bianca questioned the burgeoning connection between Caleb and Erica, Lady Empress retorted back “Of course there is a connection! I can’t help it that men are attracted to me!” Oh, Erica.

WTH? Moment: What the heck is Erica smoking, leaning on Caleb so much and basically shutting Jack out? Not only is Jack smart and awesome, but he WANTS to help Erica, legally and emotionally. Why is Erica not accepting it – but willing to take it from Caleb?

Best Moment: David wakes up! Particularly because it happened like 4.5 seconds after Erica got off the hook for shooting him (even though she didn’t, Kendall did). Now that’s a cliffhanger.

Performer of the Week: We’re going to give this to Shannon Kane (Natalia) and JR Martinez (Brot). Their post-coital scenes, where Natalia freaked out because she thought Brot loved her and left her (he really just went to get breakfast) were sweet and Shannon, in particular, really laid Natalia’s emotions on the table. Plus, these two are so cute together in general they deserve a shout out.

Why We Love All My Children This Week: Because Ryan proposed to Greenlee! Which means that David’s going to be furious, and that the secret Madison is keeping is that much bigger. Basically, more drama, which we love. Also, we loved that Erica wears high heeled boots.

What were your highlights (and lowlights) of the week?

I finally caught up on watching most of this week's shows. (I had to fast forward most of Rylee in bed. I can't stomach them and their slurpy kisses and cutesy little teenageish gimmicks. Please, stick a fork in them and move on.) The main thing that I notice about AMC week after week is the absence of Zach Slater, especially every time we get a scene in the Slater house. I am not impressed with the two boys that keep showing up there, and they only make the absence of the man who is Kendall's soulmate that much more obvious. Chemistry can't be forced or manufactured, and it's painfully obvious that it's not happening here.

Also, it's time for Erica to move on from stories where she's constantly falling for another man. After 22 years, if she can't commit to Jack, something's wrong. Either put them together or move them away from each other for good. Is there no story that can be told that doesn't involve someone falling in love with someone she's not married or engaged to? Or ill-suited for?

I hope the writers will write a story where Kendall is able to investigate Zach's death. Keeping her sick and in the dark is getting old. She doesn't need another protector; she's a strong, capable woman who should be written as one. I want to see her have a story where she's doing something and making decisions and taking action, and all without having to lean on some man to do it.

I did like Scott coming to Madison's rescue with Ryan, although I don't really see them as a couple. And it's kind of silly to have Scott roaming around the hospital doing data entry. I realize AMC maybe can't afford another set to give him an office (wouldn't he be in a cube, anyway?) but that's just dumb. Ricky expecting Kendall to swing a hammer with her heart condition? Also dumb.

I want my JERICA!

I want Zach Slater back, in the form of Thorsten Kaye! While I greatly appreciate Kendall still being all about her husband, this story should be about a wife locating the love of her life, against all odds, and reuniting with Team Slater. Mr. Kaye's absence is leaving a huge void on the show. Make it happen, bring Zach back to Pine Valley.

Kendall being told of the mysterious circumstances surrounding Zach's "death" will lead to a surprising twist that most fans will cheer about - Thorsten Kaye's Mr. Slater is alive and reunited with his family. This complex character and male lead is greatly missed.

I did like the Erica/David scenes. These characters have a long and complicated history and both actors have a comfort level that is a pleasure to watch. What I do not like is that the writing has an opportunity, now that David has woken up from the coma, to make him a more gray character, but alas it looks like they are back to making him a one note villain.....blackmailing Erica about knowing that it was Kendall who shot him.
I also thought the scene of Kendall confronting David was well done. Here again you have two characters who have a long complicated history, portrayed by actors who shine in all their performances, AM and VI, no matter how bad the writing. Alicia Minshew as Kendall grieving the loss of Zach, has been giving one stellar performance after another and this scene with David was well done. What ruined it is when PV's newest doctor burst in, grabbed Kendall and dragged her out of David's room.

This newbie character portrayed by JV is grating my last nerve. His obnoxious holier than though behavior with everyone and especially Kendall is cartoonish and forced. The character is one note and the actor portraying him does not have the acting chops to instill anything rootable in him. In any scene with an actress of AM's caliber he looks awkward and thus their scenes are uncomfortable to watch. For those of us who have watched Alicia's Kendall with Thorsten Kaye's Zach for six years through bad writing and good weave screen magic no matter what the s/l for their characters, cringe in watching the disaster that is Kendall with
Griffen. They are too far apart in acting abilities for their scenes to be natural.....in short they just don't fit and any writing for these characters to interact, which seems to be where the writing is heading, will most certainly fail and fail badly. I did however see a comfort level of Griffen with Amanda. There is potential there, since Cara, his sister, showed
some good vibes with Jake.
Scott with Madison looked great. They could have potential as a couple even though the writing seems to be heading in the direction of Madison's pregnancy being the angst factor in a triangle with Ryan and Greenlee.

Kendall's scenes with Rev. Ricky were pleasant to watch. There is a vibe of friendship there that I would like to see between a man and a woman that has no romantic vibes to it. I realize that is rare in a soap, but why not try something new. Enough with the triangles that are so predictable and boring.
Finally, even though Zach's presence is being kept alive by Kendall's grieving, TK's absence from the show is being felt more and more with every episode. Zach was a presence that made you want to tune in no matter what s/ls were on the the screen. The same with Adam. Both characters and actors were AMC at it's best and the canvas without them is like a barren desert. No amount of newbies will ever be able to replace them. ABCD must make every effort to bring back TK/Zach and reunite the show's power couple. I would also like to see David Canary to make at least some cameo appearances.

It's breaking my heart to see what AMC is doing to my beloved Jerica. The fans want them together and want KWALEB paired up so what's the problem?
